Michelle Obama will make a cameo appearance on an episode of "Iron Chef America" filmed at the White House, the Food Network announced Wednesday.

The first lady introduces the secret ingredient for the challenge, which pits White House Chef Cristeta Comerford and Iron Chef Bobby Flay against Iron Chef Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse.

The White House approached the Food Network about filming "Iron Chef America" at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. as a way to reach those people who haven't heard yet about the first lady's efforts to curb childhood obesity through healthy eating and exercise, the New York Times reports.

Crémant - Wine of the Week

cremant de bourgogne

by Kristine Hansen

Generally, crisp and celebratory, wines like cava, brut, Champagne and American sparkling wines probably won't turn any heads if you bring them to an occasion that calls for bubbles. But Crémant, a French sparkling wine, can make a fashionable entrance. Although still a nouveau import to many areas of the U.S. it's tres affordable. Most Crémants are priced under $20 a bottle.

Crémant is produced in seven regions throughout France: Bordeaux, Alsace, Burgundy, Loire, Die, Jura and Limoux. Strict laws from the French government stipulate that the grapes must be harvested by hand and the bottles aged for at least a year. There are also rules for the composition of grapes. And they differ by region. In Burgundy, for instance, at least 30 percent of the wine must be Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris.

While traveling through the Burgundy region this summer, in between spreading cheeses on rustic baguettes and reveling in the deliciousness of mustards from this region, we sipped some very good bottles of Crémant de Bourgogne. Fortunately you can buy both of our top picks in the States.

Ground Beef Recall Expanded

A ground beef recall for more than 545,699 pounds of meat has been expanded to states from North Carolina to Maine on fears of E. coli contamination.

Fairbanks Farms of Ashville, N.Y., expanded its ground beef recall on Monday after learning packages of its meat produced between Sept. 14 and 16 may have been distributed to more states than first thought. The recalled ground beef was sold in Acme, BJ's, Ford Brothers, Giant Food Stores, Price Chopper, Shaw's and Trader Joe's.

Gordon Ramsay Done With 'Kitchen Nightmares'

Hot-headed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is finally waking up from his kitchen nightmare.

The reality show "Kitchen Nightmares" put Ramsay in failing restaurants across America for one week so the tell-it-like-it-is chef can try to turn the struggling businesses around. But the show proved too troublesome for the salty U.K. chef, who says he's through with it.

The foul-mouthed Brit admits the show's title is a little too fitting: "If the restaurants succeed, there's no praise," Ramsay told The Sun. "If they're screwed, we're blamed and get lawyers' letters."

More than two-thirds of the restaurants Ramsay "helped" ending up being sold or shut down, the paper said.

Slashfood attempted to contact the production company, Granada Entertainment, to clarify if both the American and British versions of the "Kitchen Nightmares" are canceled -- our calls were not returned.

Innovative Nosh at Kosher Fest 2009

There was an air of excitement, a feeling of pride and a hunger for innovation at the first day of Kosher Fest 2009, held Tuesday at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, N.J. The event showcased not only the biggest and best kosher products from around the world, but also the newest kosher products on the market.

Aside from the typical kosher fare of smoked meats and breads, there were kosher wines, liquors and something called Organic Batter Blaster -- which, to us, conjured thoughts of a culinary video game. Alas, it's but a pressurized batter -- packaged in what looks like a whipped-cream can -- for waffles and pancakes that is both organic and kosher.

We also glimpsed an enormous shopping cart filled with kosher food and yes, kosher energy-type drinks. One such beverage, Brain Toniq, is billed as a healthy, kosher alternative to Red Bull and won Best New Beverage in the competition phase of Kosher Fest, held two weeks ago.

The world's "first non-caffeinated think-drink specifically used to improve cognitive function and increase brain power" (or so promises Brain Toniq Director of Sales Mark Loebach) is just one of many examples of the innovation and expansion of kosher food products into the mainstream prominently displayed at Kosher Fest.

General Mills Cereals to Drop Smart Labels

General Mills announced this week it would drop "Smart Choices" labels from its products, including cereals.

The company planned to put these labels on up to 67 items including General Mills cereals such as Chocolate Lucky Charms and Cheerios, but bowed to public pressure after the Food and Drug Administration said the labels misled consumers, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

Food companies created the labels as an easy way to find healthy foods in the grocery store, but drew criticism when it appeared on mayonnaise and Froot Loops, the paper said.

KFC Under Fire for Colonel Sanders UN Grilled Chicken Stunt

kentucky fried chicken's colonel sanders gives away free grilled chicken outside the united nations

A KFC Colonel Sanders lookalike has caused a minor international incident.

Last week, KFC sent an actor dressed as chain founder Colonel Harland Sanders to the United Nations in New York to publicize its Oct. 26 UNFry Day for Kentucky Grilled Chicken. But it seems the actor and his entourage were a little too good as they were able to bypass United Nations security to pose for photos with Libya's Dr. Ali A. Treki, the current president of the UN Assembly.

"It should not have happened -- that I will stress, and very strongly," Michele Montas, spokeswoman for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, told Canada's National Post. She added there was "some lapse in security," with a guard ushering the Sanders lookalike "into the U.N."

A KFC official told Slashfood on Thursday that they never planned to send the Colonel into the U.N.

"The KFC Colonel was in New York City for a Kentucky Grilled Chicken sampling event outside the United Nations," Laurie Schalow, a KFC spokeswoman told Slashfood. "While serving free chicken on First Avenue, he was invited inside by a U.N. staff member, along with a photographer who was documenting the event."

The chicken chain did send "a tongue-in-cheek letter to the U.N. requesting that they allow their employees to "unthink" their usual lunch routine and sample Kentucky Grilled Chicken outside the U.N.," she said.

"KFC has the utmost respect for the United Nations and this lighthearted event in New York City was in no way meant to undermine the important work that the U.N. does around the world," Schalow said.

What do you think? Should the Colonel have gone to the U.N.? Let us know in the comments below.

It's National Chocolate Day

Celebrate National Chocolate Day. Photo: 427/flickr

No excuse is usually necessary to dig into a piece of delectable chocolate, but as Wednesday, Oct. 28, is National Chocolate Day, feel free to eat two pieces.

We've got a few ways for you to celebrate. First, try whipping up a chocolate confection in honor of National Chocolate Day. We suggest 427's Chocolate Beet Cake (shown above), Quadruple Chocolate Brownies, Chocolate Chow Mein Noodles or Vanilla Hot Chocolate.

Next, consider eating chocolate with unlikely ingredients. Vosges' Mo's Chocolate Bacon Bar comes to mind. Scharffen Berger's Chocolate Adventure Recipe Contest is still accepting submissions -- you just have to combine chocolate with one of 16 exotic ingredients: paprika, cumin, smoked sea salt, papaya, rice flour, black-eyed peas, peanut butter (OK not that exotic), Malbec, fresh or whole dried chili pepper, cacao nibs, raw honey, sumac, banana leaf, pandan leaf, crystallized ginger and fresh mint. Two winners will get $10,000.

Or just ponder chocolate in all its forms, from chocolate skulls and radioactive chocolate to Baker's chocolate.

McDonald's Monopoly Game Has Chance at $1 Million Prize

McDonald's is offering the chance to win $1 million to lucky winners in its online McDonald's Monopoly game. The game runs through Nov. 2.

Players can go online, roll the virtual Monopoly dice, and see how their pieces land. Players who land on "Chance" are entered into the $1 million daily drawing.

Like with real-world Monopoly, players can acquire Monopoly properties but win real cash prizes. The game can also be played on Facebook and on mobile devices.
